Victorino Briones B.S. in Biology & M.D. University of Santo Tomas, Philippines
I grew up in the small city of Batangas in the Philippines. One of my first experiments was a simple filtration system made of sand, newspaper and charcoal. In college, I eventually took Biology, then afterwards proceeded to medical school, internship and finally a residency program. I entered Georgetown University to pursue a doctorate in the Department of Cell Biology. The department is focused on several aspects of embryonic stem cell research, blood vessel development, protate cancer and various signal transduction research. Immediately, I felt welcome by the open-mindedness of many professors. Their enthusiasm was quite evident by their eagernes to explain their research to students. The high standard of science was very impressive. Presently, I am studying the mechanism of DNA methylation and gene expression. It has been a long and exciting journey from that filtration system I devised when I was a boy to where I am now. Although surely the avenues of scientific pursuit is endless, I am certain that my training here in Georgetown University will help me travel that road competently.
