Biomedical Graduate Stipend Processing

Biomedical graduate doctoral students generally receive one of two types of stipend awards. Please read the following carefully for information regarding any paperwork that may be required in order to process stipend payments. Fellowship StipendNo service (work) obligation is associated with fellowship stipends. Unless otherwise specified in the award letter issued to the recipient, payments will be made once per month on the last working day of the month. Taxes will not be withheld on fellowship stipend payments nor will they be reported to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). However, it is important to note that these payments may be taxable to the recipient. Non-service fellowship stipend recipients are urged to review the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page on the Georgetown University Department of Taxation website. Fellowship stipends are processed through the Accounts Payable Office. Students wishing to have their fellowship stipend payment deposited directly into a checking or savings account must complete the following form, and submit it to Ms. Kathy Davis, NE303 Med-Dent: For fellowship stipends, no other paperwork is required from the award recipient. If the recipient is not a U.S. citizen, the recipient should contact the University's Tax Accounting Office to determine whether they are considered a resident for tax purposes, and to discuss possible tax treaty exemptions and possible exemption from Social Security and Medicare tax. The student may be requested to bring specific documentation (such as a copy of their award letter, Passport, Visa, I-94 Card, and I-20 or IAP-66 Form), and should contact Mr. Smith prior to visiting the Tax Accounting Office. ( Return to TOP )
Assistantship StipendA service (work) obligation is associated with assistantship stipends. As part of the recipients academic training, they will assist either in teaching, research, or other matters of an academic nature, including periods between semesters when recipients are expected to be engaged in full-time research (for non-US citizens or non-permanent residents of the US, a maximum of 20 hours per week for ). Exact responsibilities will be specified by the recipient's research mentor. Unless otherwise specified in the award letter issued to the recipient, payments will be made once per month on the last working day of the month. Assistantship stipends are subject to withholding and will be reported to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as taxable income. Assistantship stipends are processed through the Office of Student Employment. Students must complete the following paperwork, and submit it to Ms. Kathy Davis, NE303 Med-Dent, in order to initiate their stipend payment:

NOTE: If a student is continuing on a service stipend from one fiscal year to the next, without interruption, and has already completed the paperwork noted above, then the paperwork does not need to be completed again. ( Return to TOP )
