This mechanism for admission is designed for those who are certain about the type of research training they wish to receive in their doctoral program. Applicants apply for admission directly to one of Georgetown's degree-granting basic science departments or interdisciplinary programs. Those who are accepted and ultimately matriculate follow the graduate curriculum established by the department or program, with the ultimate goal of obtaining a doctoral degree from that department or program.

Participating degree-granting basic science departments and interdisciplinary programs are:

• Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
• Department of Cell Biology
• Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• Department of Pharmacology
• Department of Physiology and Biophysics
• Interdisciplinary Program in Neuroscience
• Interdisciplinary Program in Tumor Biology
